How I Built a 200,000-Person Paid Membership Community With $0 in the Bank to Start
If I could give one piece of advice about the best way to start a successful community, it would be to build the one you need yourself.I launched Tech Ladies for selfish reasons. I worked in tech but didn’t have many women colleagues, and I wanted to build a network that could help me grow and weather any job change. Also, it was fun and validating to meet other women facing the same issues I did at work. Turns out, so many other people felt the same way at work too. As one of the first communities for all women in tech, not just engineers, Tech Ladies had a wide pool of potential members, and they started showing up in droves. Our community was adding hundreds of new people each week without any paid advertising.Over the past six years, Tech Ladies has continued to grow steadily with very little money spent on acquisition (which was especially important given I made the decision to bootstrap my company instead of seeking outside funding). With over 200,000 members, we’re now one the largest communities of women in tech. And more importantly, we’ve had a measurable impact on the lives of our members, helping them land jobs, grow in their careers, and find support they might not have access to at work.The strategies that got my community here weren’t complicated—most of them I could implement myself while building the company from my couch. They just involved a deep dedication to and understanding of the people I was here to serve.Here are four simple approaches that worked for me while building my community on a budget.1. I made it easy to join and tempting to stayWhen building a community, it’s not enough to bring members in; you also have to know how to keep them. To think through this, I did a lifecycle analysis of my target member. I started by asking myself: Why would someone join Tech Ladies? I knew most people came to us through the job board when they were searching for their next opportunity, and given that was our biggest acquisition path, I wanted to keep the job board free and easy to access. We simply require people to sign up for a free account to start applying, which also subscribes them to our newsletter.If I had just left the community at that, members would churn as soon as they got a job, maybe returning in a few years when they’re ready for a new role. So, I asked myself, what would make someone stick around? My thinking was, at any point in a person’s career, they need help with something—how could we provide exactly what they need at every step? This inspired me to add a free community forum, where people can ask for help when they’re stuck on something at work. It also encouraged me to make sure the events we hosted weren’t only about networking for job searchers, but also focused on other topics that would help members grow their careers. This exercise also helped me see the potential for adding a paid membership tier—with even more learning resources and networking opportunities—for members who wanted a deeper investment in their career. Thanks to this exercise, many of our members have been around for years and years. And when they see the value they get from the community, they refer others, making this customer lifecycle a flywheel that helps Tech Ladies keep on growing.2. I integrated the community with my members’ habitsTo keep community engagement high, I looked for repeatable ways to help us become a part of our members’ daily lives. In the very early days, this was our job drop email. We were posting new jobs to the community daily, but by rounding them up and branding them as “Job Drop Tuesdays,” we had a feature members looked forward to every week. We check in with our paid community weekly with a “goals and wins” post that everyone can contribute to. And we’ve always been mindful of having a regular cadence of events.This repeatable content has been really key in terms of building relationships and thought leadership with our members. Think about it: With the weekly emails alone, members hear from us 52 times a year and start to think of us as the place to go for fresh job listings. The weekly community posts and regular events became an easy way members could engage with each other and be reminded of the value we offer. Key to this approach is ease and choosing activities that my team could feasibly deliver on a regular cadence. A mistake I see a lot of communities make is over-promising and under-delivering: For instance, throwing one massive event and then getting busy and never having another event again. I found it’s better to start small with something we could really stick to so our members never feel like we’re letting them down.3. I aligned my incentives with the communityAs a business owner, my incentive is to make money—at least enough to support myself, to pay my team, and to grow the business. But I never want members to feel like we’re constantly trying to upsell them on the paid membership tier. In fact, that’s a fast way to compromise the health and integrity of the community. So we built a revenue model that functions no matter how a member engages with the community. Obviously, it’s great if someone joins as a paid member, because they offer direct revenue to the company. But a free member who finds a job through us is also valuable—it’s a win for our hiring partners and encourages them to keep renewing with us year after year. People who contribute to the community make it more valuable for everyone and may refer someone new to join Tech Ladies.Ultimately, there are so many ways members can benefit our community and our company, I’ve found it doesn’t serve us to obsess about who’s going to pay us and when. By creating multiple revenue streams, we’ve made it easier to focus on supporting our community in exactly the ways they need so they’re excited to keep supporting us back.4. I’ve always stayed obsessed with what my members wantYes, I started Tech Ladies because it was the community I needed personally. But it turns out the best way to build the community was by setting aside my own needs, wants, and vision being obsessed with what my members truly want. My team does user research constantly. Sometimes it’s formal: Sending out a survey asking members what they’d like to see from us, or doing A/B tests on new features to see what people interact with. But, more often than not, this simply involves staying engaged in our own community and paying attention. What are the topics that pop up in the community most often? Which events have the highest attendance rate, and how can we build on those topics? This is how we came up with the idea to launch a Leadership Accelerator. We saw over and over that once members got jobs, they often struggled to continue growing. We just launched the first accelerator cohort this fall and plan to continue working with our members to hone how we can best support them through this next step in their career growth. Instagram Monetization: 5 Ways to Make Money On the App
Are you interested in earning money on Instagram but not sure how to start? We’ve got you covered.
Although people first think of influencer marketing, that’s not Instagram’s sole monetization opportunity. In this article, we’ll dive into the current features the social app offers.
Although monetization on the platform can involve promoting products and/or services to increase sales, that’s not what it always looks like. With monetization, the focus is on the content whereas selling focuses on the products/services.
While YouTube is seen as the OG monetization platform for content creators, Instagram is making its way up there.
When we surveyed marketers for our 2022 Social Media Trends Report, 73% say they work with influencers on Instagram compared to only 61% on YouTube.
But as we’ll cover later on, that’s only one way to make money on the app. Before we get into those, let’s review monetization requirements.
Instagram Monetization Tools
Ever since Instagram transitioned to a creator-focused platform, they have tested numerous monetization tools. Some end up staying on the platform while others are sunsetted.
For instance, in June 2021, Instagram announced that it would test an affiliate program, in which creators could have their own Shop tab and earn commissions based on sales they influenced.After over a year of testing, the platform announced that it would no longer be available after August 2022.
Another monetization tool was Reels ads, a move designed to encourage creators to post more Reels. It allowed them to earn money via ads displayed before and/or after their Reels. That has seemingly been replaced by the bonus play program (more on that later.)

Each monetization practice will have its own set of requirements, but there are general policies set by Instagram for any creator who wants to earn money on the app.
You cannot earn money on Instagram if you share:Sexual, violent, profane, or hateful content.
Static and looping videos
Image slideshows
Misinformation
Unoriginal and misleading content
Polarizing or inflammatory content relating to race, gender, age, or other sensitive subjects.For more details on this, check out Instagram’s full list of content monetization policies.
How to Get Monetized on Instagram
1. Influencer Marketing
Becoming an influencer is the most popular way to make money on Instagram and from the marketers’ perspective, it’s one of the main ways they work with creators.
According to HubSpot research, 64% of marketers said they work with micro-influencers (those with 10K to 99K followers) when asked about their 2022 influencer marketing campaigns, and 57% work with macro-influencers (100K-999K).
The great news is that even if you have a smaller follower count, you can still be an influencer. 27% of marketers we surveyed say they worked with nano influencers (1K-9K) in 2022.
How much can you earn? The limit does not exist.
A Business Insider report found that Instagram influencers can earn anywhere from a couple of thousand dollars to millions. It really depends on their rates, their follower count, engagement rates, niche, and more.
Requirements
To be an influencer, there are no set requirements. Here’s what you should aim for:500+ followers
Have an engagement rate of 2% or more
Rich, high-quality content2. Bonuses
To encourage creators to post Reels, Instagram launched a bonus program, which rewards users based on how often they post Reels and how they perform.
Every creator will have personalized bonus goals, maximum payout amounts, and deadlines. Creators have reported payouts ranging from $600 to $35,000, according to a Verge article but Instagram has not shared how it determines payment and goals.Image Source
However, Meta did promise to invest $1 billion in monetization opportunities for creators in 2022.
The program is currently only invite-only and as such, isn’t available to all users just yet. It’s also not available in all languages. However, if it does become a permanent feature, additional tools will be added.
If you have been invited to participate, you will receive a pop-up notification that will lead to your professional dashboard. From there, you’ll have to activate it before your eligibility expires.
That involves agreeing to Instagram’s terms and conditions and then adding your business information and payout details. Note that you will get your payout once you’re earned at least $100.
From there, all that’s left to do is create your Reels.
Requirements
To qualify for the program, you must:Be 18 years of age or older.
Live in the United States.
Have less than 1 million followers.
Share accurate content.
Have authentic engagement.
Have an established presence on the platform.

3. Badges
Love going live with your audience on Instagram? Now is your chance to earn money while doing it.
When you go live, viewers can buy badges ranging from $0.99 to $4.99 and support the creators they love – up to $250 worth of badges per Live video. The best part is that as of September 2022, creators keep $100 of their revenue from badges received.Image Source

Set up your payout details.
Note: You will only get paid once you’ve earned at least $25.
Go Live.

Be based in the United States.Badges are available on an invite-only basis to creators in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Japan, Australia, Turkey, Brazil, Mexico, and the UK.
Have a Creator or Business account.
Have at least 10,000 followers.
Adhere to Instagram’s Partner Monetization policies and content guidelines.4. Instagram Subscriptions
In January of this year, Instagram announced it was testing creator subscriptions with only 10 users based in the U.S. Months later, this subscription test has expanded to more creators but is still on an invite-only basis.Here’s how it works: Creators can launch a paid subscription, priced at their discretion, which gives their followers access to exclusive content, such as posts, Lives, Stories, Chats, and Reels.

It allows creators to build a more intimate community and share content with their most loyal followers.
Here’s how you get started:Go to “Profile.”
Click on your “Professional Dashboard.”
Tap “Subscriptions.”From there, you can set your pricing, keep track of your earnings, set up your payout details, and more.
RequirementsFor now, you must receive an invitation to participate in Instagram’s Subscription feature.
5. Gifts
Business Insider recently reported that Instagram is testing a new monetization feature internally called “Gifts.”
According to app researcher and developer Alessandro Paluzzi, the tool would allow followers to send gifts to their favorite followers. As you can see, you can do much more than collaborate with brands on Instagram to earn money.

Workforce Trends You Need To Know About in 2022 [New Data]
The past two years have brought on changes in the workforce, especially when it comes to how people do their jobs and where they do their jobs.
In this post, we’ll discuss new data from HubSpot’s State of Consumer Trends Report that shows exactly how consumers feel about work in 2022 and what they expect from their employers.How Consumers Feel About Work in 2022
In 2022, consumers want businesses to continue to offer the remote and hybrid work models that increased in popularity in 2020. The State of Consumer Trends survey found that 40% of respondents are in the office full-time or nearly full-time, 32% are in remote roles, and 28% are in hybrid roles.
Even though people are returning to the office, 54% of remote and hybrid workers expect to continue to be able to work their preferred model, and more than half would consider leaving their role if they were required to return to the office full time.Consumers also want the businesses they work for to understand what’s important to them in how they work, and 65% of those surveyed said they want to feel like they’re making a positive impact with the work they do.
More than half of respondents also said they want to work for companies with a diverse and inclusive work culture. Valuable ways to speak to this desire and help employees feel seen in the workplace are offering employee resource groups for people to find community and encouraging healthy work/life balance habits.
Regarding job satisfaction, 70% of survey respondents said they are satisfied with their current job, and 12% are dissatisfied.
People who stay in their current roles do so because of competitive pay, having a healthy work/life balance, and having a flexible work schedule, and those considering leaving do so because pay isn’t competitive, they experience burnout, and they don’t feel supported by management.With this in mind, potential economic instability could change how these trends look. Let’s go over what this could mean.
How the Recession Could Impact Today’s Workforce Trends
Although there have been no official declarations of recession, businesses preparing for potential economic instability will likely make decisions that preserve assets. This ensures that there is enough money to keep the company afloat, and many of these decisions initiate changes in investments, budgets, and even in the workforce and hiring practices.
For example, Meta, Twitter, and Uber are a few companies that have updated their hiring processes. Dara Khosrowshai, Uber CEO, said hiring will become a privilege, and the business will “Be deliberate about when and where we add headcount.”
Economic changes could also mean that businesses are more strict about how employees work. However, even if companies are more strict, consumers likely won’t change their desire for flexibility — some might even be more inclined to work remotely or hybrid if it could mean cutting costs for things like childcare or transportation.
Nela Richardson, Chief Economist at ADP and co-head of the ADP Research Institute, says that, in the face of a possible recession, companies will need to invest more in their people to stay competitive in the market.
However, the state of employment could change quickly if we were to enter a recession. So, the best way to keep employees satisfied is to understand their needs and what they want in the workforce. Many trends in the HubSpot Blog survey may become even more critical as economic instability can be stressful.
For example, workers might search for more support in their work environment, whether from managers, connecting with people like them in employee resource groups, or having a healthy work-life balance.
