It’s Not Just a Marketing Phrase: 3 Ways to Deliver on Being a “Purpose-Driven Brand”
We’ve entered the era of purpose.
70% of employees believe it’s important to work for a business with a clear sense of purpose. And, 54% of consumers have reduced or stopped purchasing from organisations they think missed the mark on environmental or social issues.Additional, countless data points in our most recent State of Consumer Trends Report highlight how having a solid purpose or mission will win over today’s audiences and enable you to stand out against competitors.
The last two and a half years have brought into focus what it means to be a purpose-driven company. The global pandemic disrupted supply chains and highlighted rising inequalities. The ongoing threat of climate change shifted market dynamics and investor expectations, leaving businesses realising they must act. Not to mention, the Great Resignation/Reflection proved that employees are increasingly seeking value and purpose at work.
There’s no question that driving value for stakeholders, society, and the planet is imperative. Today and in the future, we’ll see more companies start to weave purpose into their business.
But, purpose is more than a buzzword. For winning companies, purpose declares a company’s core reason for existence and its unique impact on the world. Done right, companies connect people’s individual purpose with the organizations. But, building that doesn’t come easy.
That’s why leaders iterate and evolve on a company’s purpose as they grow. At HubSpot, our purpose of building a company that future generations would be proud of serves as our roadmap to help determine which ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) initiatives we pursue to make an impact.
While we’re still early in our journey, there are three areas that I believe are key for companies to deliver on purpose: authenticity, engagement, and influence.
How to Run (& Market) Your Brand With Purpose
1. Embed purpose in a way that’s authentic to your organization
In the 2011 Black Friday edition of The New York Times, Patagonia published a bold full-page ad telling customers to not buy their jacket. Going into detail as to why, Patagonia transparently listed the factors: the jacket required 36 gallons of water to produce (enough to fill the daily needs of 45 people), emitted 20 pounds of carbon dioxide (24 times the weight of the jacket), and produced two-thirds of its weight in waste.Source: Patagonia, The New York Times
It’s not just about simply stating that you have a purpose. Authentic purpose-driven companies “walk the walk” by being transparent, accountable, and authentic in everything they do. Patagonia’s campaign resonated with so many because it had a powerful message without sacrificing their purpose of being in business to save our home planet.
To truly drive change, purpose must be rooted in authenticity. Without authenticity, purpose falls flat and leads to distrust and confusion.
That’s why at HubSpot, we walk the walk before we talk the talk. Everything from our business decisions, our action plan around Black Lives Matter, and where we’re falling short is communicated clearly to our employees before it’s shared externally. Companies can lead with authenticity by ensuring their purpose reflects the company’s core values, continually reinforcing how employees are contributing to purpose, and committing real action to deliver on that purpose.
2. Engage employees to activate their purpose
Before you even consider marketing around your purpose, you’ll want to engrain it within the work you do.
According to Mckinsey & Company, 70% of employees feel that their sense of purpose in life is defined by their work, indicating that an organisation’s purpose can be a strong influence on an individual’s sense of worth.
At a time when people are looking to derive meaning from their work, it’s important to continually reinforce how and why employees can contribute to making an impact.
One way to engage employees is by communicating not only the company’s actions, but also what employees can do to get involved.
For Earth Day this year, members of our Eco@HubSpot employee interest resource group participated in a Slack event called the Growing Greener Challenge, where they received one easy action each day to help invest in our planet.
For each completed action, HubSpot donated to the Global Greengrants Fund (GGF). Collectively, HubSpotters took 1,306 actions – including buying local foods with a low carbon footprint, unplugging appliances not in use and repurposing items that would normally be thrown away – raising over $9,000 for the GGF.
It’s also important to set the tone at the top, and create an environment where employees feel comfortable living their purpose at work. As part of our twice-a-year performance reviews, all employees, including executive leadership, are asked to share how they are prioritizing diversity, inclusion, and belonging — a core part of our mission — in their work.
And at every company meeting, we take time to recognize HubSpotters who embody an aspect of our core values, which helps to inspire a sense of purpose across the business.
3. Consider your influencing role in purpose.
Purpose shouldn’t live in a vacuum. Part of being a responsible, purpose-driven company is not only creating value for your own company, but for others within your larger ecosystem. This can include your customers, suppliers, and even your customers’ customers.
As pressure continues to build for companies to meet regulatory demands and take action on climate change, suppliers will be expected to do more than just deliver product. They’ll be asked in detail about what it means to be a responsible business.
Recently, I’ve been engaging with our customers to understand the sustainability issues they care about and how we may be able to collaborate. The feedback is clear: they have a real appetite for more transparency into what we’re doing, and want to join us on our journey. With over 135,000 customers across more than 120 countries, it would be irresponsible not to recognize the tremendous potential we have for impact. Getting a good grasp of and investing in this multiplier effect is key to success.
As we gear up for a new year, we’re asking ourselves how our ESG efforts connect with HubSpot’s mission, purpose, and core values. We have made good progress but still have a way to go and more to learn, but by leading with authenticity, engaging our employees, and considering our influencer role, we’ll continue to make progress on our authentic purpose to build a company that future generations can be proud of.

Keep up with the latest updates on the feature here.Twitter Blue originally launched back in 2021 to certain regions for testing, including the U.S, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. The initial subscription allowed users a grace period of 30 seconds to undo tweets, provided them with bookmark folders to organize their saved tweets, and included a reader mode that made viewing tweets easier.The bookmarks folder, in particular, is a great way to organize a variety of tweets. For example, you can create one bookmark folder for tweets that inspire you, and another for tweets from your followers.Twitter is in the process of revamping this feature. The new Twitter Blue is advertised by the platform as a “premium subscription service that elevates quality conversations on Twitter.” Users will have to pay $7.99 to unlock the previous features, along with new ones. While it seems like the current Twitter Blue is on pause for now, Twitter has already advertised several new features Twitter Blue will include.Edit TweetsAfter many pleas from users, Twitter finally launched an editing feature in 2022. As of now, the feature is only available to Twitter Blue users. The edit button allows a user to edit a tweet up to five times within a 30-minute time-frame. For security reasons, viewers will be able to see the edit history and the original tweet.The ability to edit your tweets will reduce any typos or mistakes in your content that come from sending out tweets on the fly, making it easier for you followers to read.🖊️Instead of sending tweets out on the fly, we recommend scheduling them in advance with Buffer. Sign up for free here.VerificationPreviously, blue check marks were only available to authorized accounts of notable figures, including celebrities, brands, reporters, and academics, to name a few. These individuals were given a blue checkmark after being independently reviewed by Twitter.While the above conditions still stand, Twitter Blue users will now also receive the blue checkmark. In order to limit the amount of impersonations on the platform, Twitter Blue users will not be able to change their names after they receive a blue checkmark.In addition, Twitter is advertising a few other features that will soon be available, including the ability for Twitter Blue users to see 50 percent fewer adds, have their tweets prioritized, and post longer videos. This feature is similar to Instagram’s Close Friends and allows you to add up to 150 people into your Twitter Circle and tweet out exclusive content just for them. To be clear, you can only create one Twitter Circle from your account.Once you set up your circle, you will have the option to send out tweets to your general audience or your Twitter Circle. The feature allows you to either start or join a conversation with a closed community. Think of it as a group based conversation through tweets.You can create a community yourself, or with another Twitter user, and either become an administrator or moderator. When you do so, you’re in charge of setting the topic of discussion, moderating the conversation, inviting members to join, and enforcing the community rules. Moderators can invite as many members as they want. You can also be a community member and join a specific Twitter Community. While some communities do have an open membership and allow anyone to join, others require an invite directly from the administrator.Twitter Communities are closed, group-based discussions amongst members, but while other Twitter users can’t engage or join in on the exchange, they will be able to view the conversation as communities are public and accessible for all to see.As an entrepreneur or content creator, a Twitter Community is a great way to host a discussion and share your expertise on the platform. In return, they’ll receive exclusive Tweets from you that your general Twitter followers won’t see.Along with access to special tweets, your subscribers will also have a badge next to their name whenever they interact with your content, so you can easily spot them. They’ll also have access to subscriber-only Twitter Spaces.You get to set the cost of your subscription to either $2.99, $4.99, or $9.99. Based on this price, you can curate the exact type of content you’ll be offering your subscribers.Subscriptions is a great way for you to connect with your most ardent subscribers and fans, and provide them with extra content. If you enable this feature, a module will appear below your Twitter bio with the option for followers to subscribe to your newsletter.Twitter users will see a preview of your newsletter by clicking the module. If you have a paid newsletter, followers will be given an option to choose which subscription they’d like to purchase.Newsletters are a great way to connect with your audience and foster community. Using the tip feature will allow your followers to tip you whenever they feel like it!As a content creator or small business, enabling this feature can help you bring in some extra cash. Receiving tips after specific tweets can also help you gauge which of your Twitter content is performing the best. This feature has also been used to help certain accounts fundraise for deserving charities and causes.In order to be eligible to receive Twitter Tips, you must be 18 years of age or older.Twitter SpacesTwitter Spaces was first rolled out in December 2020, and has quickly become a popular feature on the site. Once you create a Twitter Space, you’re essentially hosting a live audio conversation on Twitter. When it was initially released, many compared Spaces to Clubhouse.Spaces on Twitter are public meaning anyone – even someone who doesn’t follow you – can join in and listen to the conversation. This also means they can chime in and speak in the Space. Though only 13 people can talk in the Space at a given time: The host, up to two co-hosts, and 10 participants.Once you’ve started a Twitter Space, there are a ton of ways to advertise it. To start, all your followers will see a purple banner for your Twitter Space at the top of their Twitter feed. You can directly invite someone by DMing them and tweeting out the link to your Twitter Space. You can also schedule Twitter Spaces ahead of time, giving you more time to advertise it to your community.The host also has the ability to record spaces. If you’ve enabled the recording feature, you can then clip an audio recording from your Space. This is a great way to highlight any notable moments from the conversation and repurpose them later for a tweet. The recording feature also makes it possible to cross-post Spaces recordings as podcast episodes.Many news organizations and media companies have used Twitter Spaces as a way to discuss breaking news, including reporters from The New York Times, NPR, and the HuffPost.
